After completing a degree in physics, Marion Burgess commenced working in acoustics in an Australian building research laboratory. Since then she has had more than 40 years of broad experience in research, teaching and consulting while at the University of New South Wales in many aspects of acoustics including building, environmental and occupational noise measurement, assessments, control and research. Since retirement she has been appointed as an Honorary Associate Professor at the School of Built Environment and contributes to the supervision of various research projects

She is a member of a number of relevant Standards Australia committees, an active member of the Australian Acoustical Society, and is currently the editor for the Springer Acoustics Series as well as an editor for the Journal Acoustics Australia. She regularly participates in national and international conferences. She has been President of two major international acoustics organisations-the International Commission for Acoustics and the International Institute for Noise Control Engineering. She has been awarded membership of the Order of Australia for her contributions nationally and internationally to acoustics and environmental noise
