I am an art and architectural historian working in the Netherlands (Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society). My main interests are concerned with how ecclesiastical art and architecture shaped and defined people's worlds as seen from the eyes of the patron, the artist(s) and the beholders. My early publications are mainly on the art and architecture of the Meuse Valley (Romanesque Art and Architecture in the Meuse Valley 1992, Romanesque Sculpture in Maastricht 2002) and its relations to that in the Rhine Valley and Northern Italy, but since I have moved onto Gothic and early renaissance buildings in the Netherlands (monograph on the sculpture of Utrecht Cathedral 2015), and presently I am working on old graffiti.
