Counterpublic Triennial Expands Across St. Louis And Beyond

(MENAFN- USA Art News) The Counterpublic Triennial is presenting its third edition,“Coyote Time,” a public art exhibition inspired by artist Alice Bucknell's commissioned work of the same name. The event encompasses numerous sites across St. Louis City and extends into the Metro East region beyond the Mississippi River. Founded in 2015 by James McAnally and Brea Youngblood, the initial goal was to integrate their gallery, The Luminary, into the urban fabric of its neighborhood.

Since becoming an independent non-profit organization in 2021, the three-month exhibition has significantly increased its reach and ambition. This year, the number of participating artists has nearly doubled compared to 2023. The exhibition is structured around five major hubs and features an international guest curatorial team, including Stefanie Hessler, Raphael Fonseca, and Wanda Nanibush. Locations include parks, community gardens, vacant lots, and an abandoned vending machine factory.

Major artists such as Glenn Ligon, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Nick Cave are showcased alongside regionally prominent artists, including Rachel Youn, Anika Todd, and Jamie Lee Harris. The opening weekend drew large crowds despite high temperatures. The triennial aims to revitalize underutilized urban spaces by channeling energy from St. Louis's established arts districts, fostering diverse interactions among visitors and challenging external preconceptions about the region.
