FIT Museum Explores Dolls' Impact On Fashion

(MENAFN- USA Art News) The Museum at FIT (MFIT) will open an exhibition this fall exploring the relationship between dolls and fashion. Titled Doll Dressing, the exhibition is scheduled to run from September 16, 2026, to January 3, 2027, and will focus on the cultural interaction between dolls and dressed appearance throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

Featuring more than 170 objects, the display includes fashion dolls alongside full-size garments, accessories, videos, and artworks. The exhibition aims to show that dolls have an influence extending beyond childhood play, serving as muses, canvases, and even prototypes for designers.

Dr. Colleen Hill, MFIT's senior curator of costume, curated the exhibition. It highlights works from designers and labels such as Balenciaga, Comme des Garçons, Maison Martin Margiela, Marc Jacobs, Patrick Kelly, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Moschino, Anna Sui, and Undercover.

Doll Dressing investigates“doll dressing,” a concept that encompasses clothing, accessories, hair, makeup, and gestures inspired by dolls. It reveals how this concept can be both expressive and subversive, enabling exploration of identity, fantasy, and personal style. The exhibition addresses six main themes:“Fashion Doll Foundations,”“Modes in Miniature,”“Playing with Dolls,”“The Dollhouse,”“All Dolled Up,” and“Broken Dolls.” These sections collectively examine dolls as style conveyors, designers' fascination with small-scale creation, childhood and nostalgia, the link between fashion and interior spaces, the“living doll” concept, and the subversive potential of unsettling doll imagery.

MFIT will also host a Doll Dressing symposium on November 13, 2026. The daylong program is free and open to the public, featuring leading scholars and designers in conversation with Dr. Colleen Hill and others. Reservations are strongly encouraged due to limited space. The Couture Council of The Museum at FIT generously supported the Doll Dressing exhibition.
