Lee, Turkmen President Meet in Seoul Ahead of Central Asia Summit
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung welcomed Turkmenistan's Serdar Berdimuhamedow to Seoul on Tuesday for bilateral talks, setting the stage for the first-ever South Korea-Central Asia Summit.
That inaugural summit, scheduled for Wednesday, is expected to tackle strategic resources, supply chains, artificial intelligence and other forward-looking areas of cooperation between South Korea and the region.
Behind closed doors, Lee pressed Berdimuhamedow for backing on major plant and infrastructure projects in Turkmenistan, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said, according to a news agency.
The two leaders committed to deepening cooperation on Turkmenistan's ambitions to build a logistics hub connecting Central Asia to the Caspian Sea — a project framed as part of the "resurrection of the great Silk Road." They also agreed to broaden joint work on shipbuilding, railway construction and new town development.
Water management featured prominently in the discussions as well, with both sides acknowledging the urgency of effective water use and anti-desertification efforts in Turkmenistan and agreeing to deepen cooperation by tapping into South Korea's smart water management technology.
Peaceful resolution of Korean Peninsula issues
Berdimuhamedow said Turkmenistan places high value on South Korea's international support and voiced backing for Lee's North Korea initiative, known as END — shorthand for Exchange, Normalization and Denuclearization.
"We have consistently maintained the position that all issues pertaining to the Korean Peninsula should be resolved through peaceful dialogue and diplomatic means, and will continue to do so," he said.
Lee, for his part, thanked Berdimuhamedow for allowing South Korean nationals in Iran to evacuate through Turkmenistan during "urgent situations" in the Middle East over the past two years.
Following the talks, the two countries formalized their cooperation with 13 bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding, spanning investment promotion, infrastructure development, joint efforts against transnational organized crime and other areas.
