UN: 125,000 Displaced as Yemen Fighting Escalates Since September
(MENAFN) At least 125,000 people have fled their homes since the start of September as fighting rages between Yemeni government forces and Houthi militants, the United Nations reported.
“Hostilities in Yemen are forcing people to flee their homes, causing civilian casualties and putting already overstretched humanitarian operations under increasing pressure,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement issued late Monday.
The agency put the number of displaced at roughly 18,000 families — around 125,000 individuals — uprooted from their homes since September began.
Citing figures from the UN Human Rights Office, the statement said 40 civilians have died amid the escalating violence, including eight killed and 32 wounded in the narrower window between September 1 and 14 alone.
Women and children bore a disproportionate share of the toll, accounting for half of those killed and more than half of the injured, OCHA said.
The office urged all parties involved in the conflict to shield civilians from harm, uphold international humanitarian law, and allow safe, unimpeded humanitarian access so urgently needed aid can reach affected communities.
The surge in fighting comes as the Houthis have expanded their grip on Yemen's Red Sea coastline in recent days, seizing territory including Mayyun Island in the strategically critical Bab el-Mandeb Strait, even as clashes with government forces intensify.
Yemen has remained locked in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and several surrounding provinces in September 2014 — a takeover that prompted a Saudi-led Arab coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the country's internationally recognized government, a war whose toll continues to mount to this day.
