Nottingham Rolls Out UK-First Face Covering Crackdown to Curb Crime

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the city now ranks among the first in the United Kingdom to impose such limits on items like balaclavas.
"The order, which has been backed by the public, will provide police officers and council officers the power to require a person to remove their face covering where their identity is being concealed to commit crime or anti-social behaviour," the force said in a statement.
The new order hands officers a broad enforcement toolkit. Violators face on-the-spot fines of £70 (roughly $94), confiscation of the offending item, or referral into the Immediate Justice Program. For those who don't get the message the first time, the consequences escalate sharply — repeat offenders risk being shut out of the city center entirely, for good.
The crackdown didn't emerge in a vacuum. Nottinghamshire Police data show more than 180 separate incidents tied to face coverings or balaclavas in the city center between June 2025 and June 2026 — a pattern authorities say demanded action.
Still, police were quick to draw a line: this is not a sweeping prohibition on covering one's face.
“It will only be used when officers reasonably believe it is being used in connection with crime, anti-social behaviour or intimidating conduct,” the statement said.
