House Votes to Pass Third War Powers Resolution to End Iran Conflict
(MENAFN) The US House of Representatives voted Tuesday to direct President Donald Trump to withdraw American forces from hostilities with Iran, passing H. Con. Res. 93 by a margin of 220-204.
Seven Republicans crossed party lines to back the resolution, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton. It marks the third time the chamber has approved similar legislation aimed at ending the conflict.
Following the vote, Rep. Gregory Meeks, the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sharply criticized the administration's handling of the military campaign against Iran. Meeks noted the US has now been engaged in the conflict for nearly 200 days, arguing the administration has fallen short of its stated goals.
He pointed to a mounting toll: higher gas prices and mortgage rates, rising inflation, billions in government spending, and American casualties. Since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, 19 US service members have been killed and more than 750 wounded.
"This is now the third War Powers Resolution that has passed the House to end this war, including my own resolution which passed both chambers. The president must end this failed war and appoint real diplomats, not real estate developers, to work multilaterally on a diplomatic solution that opens the Strait and reduces tensions," Meeks said.
