Italy Weighs Alternatives to Schengen Border Suspension With Slovenia
(MENAFN) Italy is exploring options to replace its suspension of Schengen free-movement rules along its border with Slovenia once the current extension lapses, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Tuesday, according to a news agency.
Speaking during a meeting with his Slovenian counterpart, Tone Kajzer, Tajani said: "Italy is considering positively the possibility of replacing, at the end of the extension, the suspension of Schengen" at the Italy-Slovenia border "with alternative, agreed-upon measures that guarantee security and combat irregular immigration,"
Tajani indicated Italy was weighing closer security cooperation between the two nations, potentially including a joint police presence modeled on the existing arrangement along the Italy-France border. "I have already discussed this with (Italian Interior Minister Matteo) Piantedosi," he said.
The current extension of border controls is set to expire December 18.
Kajzer responded favorably to the prospect of tighter cooperation, calling the shared border "a space for cooperation and new opportunities."
Tajani was careful to frame the measures as non-political, stressing they were not aimed at any specific country but rather driven by security concerns and efforts to curb irregular migration. "It's not an attitude against anyone, it's not a political position," he said.
The Slovenia talks came the same day Italy extended temporary controls on travelers arriving from Spain, citing security risks and concerns over potential terrorist infiltration. Spain pushed back sharply against the move, with Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares calling the measures "absurd, useless and a disgrace."
Tajani defended the decision, arguing that the current security climate required authorities to keep the country's borders firmly protected. The move follows mass border crossings in which tens of thousands of people entered Ceuta from Morocco between July 30-31, according to estimates from the Spanish government.
