House Votes to Kill Democratic Push to Impeach Trump
(MENAFN) The US House of Representatives voted Tuesday to shut down a Democratic-led attempt to impeach President Donald Trump over his administration's aggressive deportation agenda.
Lawmakers approved a motion to table H. Res. 1486 — a resolution impeaching Donald John Trump, President of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors — by a vote of 232-147. Forty-seven members voted "present," including top Democratic leadership: Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark, and Pete Aguilar.
The measure was tabled after 18 Democrats broke ranks to join nearly the entire Republican conference in voting it down. The resolution had been introduced by Rep. Al Green.
House Democratic leaders announced Monday they would vote "present" rather than back the resolution outright, arguing that any formal impeachment push should first be grounded in a more thorough congressional investigation.
H.Res. 1486 alleges that Trump abused his presidential authority through his oversight of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The resolution directly cites the deaths of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, and Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, and accuses the administration of violating constitutional rights and defying court orders.
