Rubio, Syria's Top Diplomat Discuss Security, Deepening Ties in Key Call
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call Tuesday with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, focusing on regional security and efforts to expand cooperation between Washington and Damascus.
During the conversation, Rubio underscored the need for continued integration of Syria's 'minority groups,' according to State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott. Rubio also commended Syria's progress in working with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN body tasked with overseeing nuclear activity worldwide and promoting its peaceful use.
In a statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said the call covered the state of bilateral relations and outlined steps to deepen ties and strengthen cooperation going forward. Al-Shaibani conveyed Syria's gratitude to the United States for lifting sanctions previously imposed on the country, the ministry noted.
The statement added: "The call addressed the situation and developments in the region as well as the important role Syria plays in supporting regional stability across both political and economic tracks,"
