Saudi Arabia Lifts Emergency Alerts After Houthi Border Scare
(MENAFN) Saudi Civil Defense rescinded emergency warnings Tuesday evening, just minutes after issuing them for three regions in the kingdom's southwest amid rising tensions with Yemen's Houthi movement.
Authorities had flagged Jazan province, the Khamis Mushait governorate and the city of Abha over a possible threat, before standing down the alert shortly thereafter.
The warning comes against the backdrop of Yemen's prolonged conflict, which erupted in 2014 when Houthi forces overran the capital, Sanaa, and swaths of surrounding territory. That takeover pushed a Saudi-led Arab military coalition to intervene the following March in defense of Yemen's internationally recognized government.
Hostilities between the Houthis and government troops have flared anew since July, when the rebels announced a naval blockade targeting Riyadh. The group has since claimed territorial gains along Yemen's Red Sea coastline and near the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, while also striking at Saudi oil facilities.
