Merz Cancels New York Trip to Remain in Berlin After Regional Elections
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has canceled his planned visit to New York next week for the United Nations General Debate, with government sources saying he needs to remain in Berlin.
“Contrary to original plans, the chancellor will not travel to New York next week, as his presence in Berlin is required,” the government circles said.
Merz had been scheduled to address the UN General Assembly’s General Debate on Wednesday, following regional elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin on Sept. 20.
His decision comes ahead of a series of important political meetings in Berlin. Senior figures from Merz’s Christian Democratic Union are due to hold internal discussions next Monday, followed two days later by a meeting of lawmakers from the CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU, in the German parliament.
The meetings come as the chancellor faces increased political pressure following the regional elections.
The decision to cancel the UN trip also comes amid renewed debate over Merz’s political standing. The discussion has intensified following a significant conservative setback in Saxony-Anhalt and a new nationwide poll showing the right-wing Alternative for Germany ahead of Merz’s Christian Democrats.
