Azerbaijan, Türkiye Chart Decades-Long Energy, Transport Push
(MENAFN) Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said Tuesday that Baku and Ankara are aligning on new joint projects designed to shape the "coming decades" of bilateral cooperation.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Baku alongside Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Bayramov said the talks centered on sectors "traditionally distinguished by their strategic importance."
Energy dominated the discussion. Bayramov said the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and the Southern Gas Corridor continue to deliver a "massive" boost to energy security for both Azerbaijan and Türkiye, as well as for a broader regional network of countries.
"We believe that, at the current stage, there are projects with immense prospects and great potential geared towards the coming decades, and work on them is currently being carried out through close coordination between the two countries," Bayramov said.
He also pointed to emerging alternative-energy initiatives, including plans to transmit Azerbaijani-produced green energy to Europe across the Black Sea, alongside a proposed energy cable linking Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan exclave to Türkiye.
Calling these projects of "great strategic importance," Bayramov said they represent "new avenues with immense potential." He added: "They facilitate the delivery of alternative energy – via Türkiye – not only to the markets of Azerbaijan and Türkiye but also to the European market."
Bayramov said he and Fidan also covered Azerbaijan's role in multilateral bodies, with particular focus on cooperation through the Organization of Turkic States (OTS). With the OTS summit set to convene in Türkiye next month, the ministers reviewed preparations, which Bayramov said carry "special significance" for both nations.
Turning to climate diplomacy, Bayramov noted Azerbaijan's role as the COP29 presidency: "As the COP29 presidency, our country expresses its full support for Türkiye — which will soon host COP31 — and our entire team, having participated in COP29 and remained active in climate diplomacy since then, will play a highly active role in the successful execution of COP31 ... both during the preparatory phase and the event itself," he said.
The two ministers additionally discussed developments across the South Caucasus and the Middle East, Bayramov said.
On regional connectivity, Bayramov reported swift progress on Azerbaijan's transport infrastructure: roughly 95% of highway construction linking mainland Azerbaijan to the Armenian border is finished, with railway construction about 75% complete. He said reconstruction of rail links in Nakhchivan is critical and already underway.
Bayramov further noted that Yerevan and Washington are holding direct talks over the 42-kilometer stretch of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) that crosses Armenian territory, with the US keeping Azerbaijan regularly briefed. He called that stretch the "missing link," saying its completion would create a "significant new transport corridor" connecting Europe to Central Asia through Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
