EU Weighs Further Sanctions Over Rising West Bank Settler Violence
(MENAFN) European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Tuesday that the bloc is considering additional sanctions targeting Israeli settlers as settlement expansion, forced displacement and settler violence continue to increase in the occupied West Bank.
Speaking during a European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg on developments in the Middle East, Kallas said the expansion of settlements and outposts was continuing alongside the displacement of Palestinians and what she described as record levels of settler violence.
"On top of three packages of sanctions against extremist settlers, discussions are now ongoing in the (European) Council on possible further designations. Accountability is a prerequisite for reigning in violent settlers," she said.
Kallas also said the EU and international partners, including the UK, should maintain pressure for an end to settlement expansion, including the proposed E1 project.
She warned that the planned development in eastern Jerusalem "seriously threatens the viability of the two-state solution," said Kallas.
Addressing the situation in Gaza, Kallas said humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate despite the existing ceasefire, describing the arrangement as a "ceasefire in name only."
"People are still being killed and wounded," she said, adding that crowded displacement areas could face increased risks from flooding and disease as winter approaches.
