UN Seeks Resolution on Visa Delays Ahead of General Assembly
(MENAFN) The United Nations said Monday that discussions with the United States remain ongoing over visa delays affecting delegations from member states preparing to attend the General Assembly’s high-level week.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the organization remained in regular contact with US officials concerning visa-related concerns raised by several delegations, including those from Russia and Palestine.
"we've been in touch with our host country friends regarding the issues raised, notably by the Russian Federation, by the Palestinian delegations, and others."
Dujarric said the UN has also been urging Washington to fulfill its responsibilities under the host country agreement governing access for delegations attending UN meetings.
When asked whether the US had provided a response, he indicated that the outcome would ultimately depend on whether the visas were granted.
"I think the response, positive or negative, will be on the issuance or non-issuance of visas.
"As we know, sometimes these things happen at the very last minute, and we hope they will all be resolved," he added.
As the host of UN headquarters, the US is bound by a longstanding agreement requiring it to facilitate visas for representatives of member states attending UN sessions.
The 81st UN General Assembly high-level week is scheduled to begin Friday and continue through Sept. 28.
