AG Blanche Vows to Prosecute AI Crimes, Rules Out New Regulation
(MENAFN) Attorney General Todd Blanche said Tuesday that the Justice Department will pursue criminal cases tied to artificial intelligence but declined to call for fresh regulations governing the technology.
Fielding questions at a White House press conference about law enforcement's concerns over AI — including its potential role in elections — Blanche was asked whether the technology's rapid rollout warranted being slowed down.
"As far as AI is concerned, ... there's a lot of criminal laws, and so if anybody associated with AI violates criminal law, we'll investigate that," he said. "We already have. There's plenty of cases involving AI that we've charged individuals."
He drew a firm line on the department's role: "I do not think it's the job of the Department of Justice to regulate. We're prosecutors, not regulators. So, we're not going to try to regulate AI."
Blanche described AI as "extraordinarily beneficial" to society overall, while acknowledging the technology "conveniently has become a flashpoint this week" — a phrase that echoed comments made separately by President Donald Trump.
