US Prepares Major Arms Package for Israel Including Heavy Bombs
(MENAFN) The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing a proposed $2.8 billion military package for Israel that would include thousands of heavy bombs, according to reports Tuesday.
The planned transfer would contain 40,000 bombs weighing 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms) each. The package reportedly consists of 20,000 MK-84 bombs, 20,000 BLU-117 bombs and 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads, with the purchases funded by US taxpayers.
The MK-84 is considered one of the most powerful conventional bombs in Western military arsenals. Its explosive force can send metal fragments over considerable distances, penetrate thick concrete and metal structures and leave large craters.
Israel has used 2,000-pound bombs extensively during military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, where their deployment has been associated with substantial civilian casualties. Israel has also faced criticism over the use of MK-84 bombs in parts of Gaza that had been designated as safe areas for civilians.
If approved, the proposed transfer would represent a larger shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel than previous packages provided by the US under both the Biden and Trump administrations.
