Aliyev Blasts European Parliament as "Nest of Corrupt Figures"

(MENAFN) Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday branded the European Parliament a "nest of corrupt figures," escalating his criticism of the bloc.

Speaking to participants at international conferences in Baku, in remarks published by his office, Aliyev said Azerbaijan had spent 30 years trying to make its voice heard across European institutions during Armenia's occupation of the Karabakh region. Instead, he said, the country was met with efforts to "maligned us, tarnished our reputation" — a campaign he said continues today through what he called a "dirty Western media campaign."

Aliyev pointed out that while Armenia has avoided sanctions from the Council of Europe, Azerbaijan was sanctioned after liberating its territories in September 2023.

"Look, this is their true face. The European Parliament is a nest of corrupt figures. I say this with full responsibility: the European Parliament is a nest of corrupt figures," Aliyev said.

He went on to claim that "millions of dollars in suitcases" were discovered in the home of the European Parliament's vice-president, alleging: "They covered it all up, as if it had never happened." Aliyev identified the official only as a "female deputy from Greece," claiming no action was taken against her and that she was subsequently released.

"Look, the European Parliament consists of these Islamophobes, and this must always remain in focus," Aliyev said, alleging an "undeclared war" against Islam and the broader Islamic world, of which he characterized Islamophobia as just one component.

Aliyev described what he called a deliberate campaign to discredit the Muslim world by conflating it with "terrorism" and committing insults against Islamic values and the Quran, calling it a "targeted policy" and urging unity in response.

"This call for unity is not merely a slogan. This is what we have faced – that is, over 30 years, both from a territorial point of view, as our territory was under occupation, and from a political point of view, as Azerbaijan is one of the very few Muslim countries participating in European organizations," Aliyev said.

"As a member of the Council of Europe, we faced these injustices, we face them and we likely will face them. This undeclared smear campaign against us will never stop. Why? Because we do not and will not bow before anyone," he continued.

"We speak our mind, we protect our national dignity and we protect our way of life. We do not allow certain trends alien to our people and religion to take root in Azerbaijan. We are guardians of morality," Aliyev added.
