Kallas Calls for Stronger European Response to Russian Hybrid Attacks
(MENAFN) European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called on European countries Tuesday to respond more firmly to what she described as Russia’s hybrid attacks, arguing that Moscow is seeking to create fear and disrupt decision-making across the continent.
Speaking to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, Kallas said Russia’s alleged activities were aimed at weakening European societies and preventing governments from taking action.
"Moscow's hybrid attacks are designed to intimidate us, paralyze our societies, and make us hesitate to act. That is precisely what Putin wants," Kaja Kallas told a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.
She urged European governments not to allow concerns over potential escalation to determine their policies and called for measures that correspond to the scale of the alleged attacks.
"We should not let fear dictate our choices. We should match the level of these attacks with concrete action and confident response," she added.
Kallas cited several recent incidents across Europe, including an alleged encounter between a Russian warship and a Danish helicopter, the destruction of a drone over Lithuanian territory by NATO aircraft, a Russian attack on a passenger train close to Ukraine’s border and the discovery of a drone in Polish waters.
She said European governments should view the incidents as part of a deliberate strategy rather than isolated events.
"We need to be clear-eyed. Those are not accidents. They are calculated attempts by Russia to weaken our resolve, test our unity, and play with fears of escalation," she said.
Kallas also emphasized that European support for Ukraine should continue despite Russia’s actions.
