Iran's IRGC Claims Downing of 5th Drone Near Hormuz Strait
(MENAFN) Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced Tuesday that it intercepted and destroyed three MQ-1 drones near the Strait of Hormuz, bringing to five the total number of drones it says it has shot down in recent days.
According to the IRGC, the aircraft were downed "over the skies" of the strategically vital waterway using its newly deployed advanced air defense system.
The announcement followed an earlier statement from the IRGC confirming it had shot down two MQ-1 drones — one over the eastern portion of the strait and another to the west.
That claim came just a day after the IRGC reported destroying yet another drone of the same model, a development confirmed by an Iranian state broadcaster.
The string of incidents unfolds against a backdrop of escalating friction between Iran and the US over the Strait of Hormuz, where the two nations have remained locked in disagreement over navigation rights through the critical passage.
Tensions in the region trace back to Feb. 28, when the US and Israel launched sweeping strikes against Iran, hitting government buildings, military installations, missile infrastructure and air defense systems. Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and US military bases throughout the region.
The conflict has since widened across the broader region, even as diplomatic channels continue working to bring the hostilities to an end.
