Nepal China Border Flood Death Toll Rises as Search Efforts Continue
(MENAFN) The death toll from last month’s catastrophic flash floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border has risen to 1,442 after rescuers recovered 14 additional bodies in Nepal on Tuesday.
Authorities said 5,698 people are still listed as missing as search and rescue operations continue.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that 1,399 bodies have been recovered from areas affected by the flooding, while 5,179 people remain unaccounted for. It added that 13,742 people have been rescued so far, with 21,022 security personnel deployed for search, rescue and relief efforts.
Among those still missing in Nepal are 587 foreign tourists. Officials cautioned that the figures are still being verified and could include unidentified victims as well as people who have already been rescued.
On the Chinese side of the border, the number of deaths remains at 43, while 519 people are still missing. The missing include 261 foreign nationals in Tibet, which Beijing officially refers to as the Xizang autonomous region.
The disaster began Aug. 26 after a glacier on Nepal’s Mount Langtang Lirung fractured at an elevation of around 5,200 meters (17,060 feet).
The break triggered a massive avalanche of ice and rock, which developed into a powerful debris flow and swept through valleys along the border.
