Yemen Reports Widespread Displacement as Military Escalation Intensifies
(MENAFN) Yemen’s government said Tuesday that nearly 12,600 families have been forced to leave their homes across six provinces as a new wave of military escalation drives further displacement.
Planning and International Cooperation Minister Mohammed Al-Baqmi said 12,597 displaced families are currently facing urgent shortages of shelter, food and clean water. He made the remarks during a meeting with Foreign Minister Afrah Al-Zouba and representatives of the United Nations, international organizations and non-governmental groups.
Al-Baqmi urged the international community to act quickly to increase available resources and close funding shortfalls affecting humanitarian relief efforts, according to reports.
Meanwhile, authorities in Yemen’s interim capital of Aden announced the creation of a humanitarian response cell following an order from Governor Abdulrahman Sheikh. The new body will focus on addressing the needs created by the latest military escalation and the resulting movement of displaced families toward the city.
Local officials said the team will evaluate the conditions of people displaced from the western coast and Taiz and coordinate assistance based on the resources currently available.
Yemen had experienced a period of relative calm since April 2022, following years of conflict between government forces supported by a Saudi-led coalition and the Iranian-backed Houthis. The Houthis took control of the capital, Sanaa, along with large parts of the country in 2014, beginning a prolonged period of conflict.
