Remote-controlled edge nodes transfer control logic to a central computing platform or zone controller while retaining essential input and output functions at the endpoint. Smart edge nodes incorporate a lightweight microcontroller or dedicated processing unit within the actuator, enabling local data processing and real-time closed-loop control. Typical functions include motor pulse-width modulation, current monitoring, position feedback and anti-pinch algorithms.
Deploying motor-control algorithms at the actuator level can improve response times, reduce the computing burden on zone controllers and strengthen functional safety isolation. If zone control units directly manage every stepping motor, brushless motor and position-feedback loop, software complexity, code volume and real-time processing requirements can increase substantially. Direct motor connections can also shift wiring concentration from the vehicle center to individual zones rather than delivering comprehensive harness simplification.
Smart actuators address these challenges by processing execution commands closer to the physical function. They can simplify wiring, improve reliability and make vehicle platforms easier to scale. The system can compensate for road-surface torque feedback, adjust steering assistance according to vehicle speed and provide greater assistance during parking or low-speed maneuvers.
48V Automotive Electrical Systems Prioritize High-Power Actuators
The transition from 12V to 48V automotive power distribution is expected to begin with high-power loads. Current vehicle platforms commonly use mixed 12V and 48V networks, requiring redesigned motors, insulation, voltage-resistant components and optimized power-management integration.
Loads rated at approximately 50W or higher can gain more substantial benefits from 48V operation, including reduced current, smaller cable dimensions, lower wiring weight and improved system efficiency. Priority applications include cooling fans, blowers, water pumps, steering motors, active suspension, braking systems and electric compressors. Medium-power applications such as seat motors and windshield wipers may migrate gradually, while low-power loads may remain at 12V where conversion offers limited economic or efficiency benefits.
Johnson Electric's 48V cooling fan portfolio illustrates the range of options available for thermal management. Its brushless motor platform covers 100W to 1,500W across 12V and 48V configurations, while its brushed motor platform covers 80W to 500W. Available designs support different fan assemblies, blade configurations, packaging requirements and control-electronics options.
Marelli's fully active suspension solution further demonstrates the role of 48V smart actuators. The system uses four electromechanical actuators, each incorporating a 48V brushless motor and reduction gear. A central control unit analyzes acceleration, suspension travel, steering angle, braking and torque-demand signals, while embedded actuator algorithms calculate motor-current targets and apply the required force to each suspension arm.
Brushless DC Motors Gain Share in High-Performance Automotive Applications
Brushless DC motors are increasingly preferred for applications requiring high efficiency, long service life, low noise and precise speed or position control.
