Iran's Top Diplomat Heads to Beijing Ahead of Xi-Trump Summit
(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will travel to China for a one-day visit Wednesday, meeting with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi just days before Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit the United States, China's Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday.
The upcoming talks mark the second time Wang has hosted Araghchi in Beijing this year; the two previously met in May, shortly before President Donald Trump's summit with Xi.
Wednesday's discussion will also be their second face-to-face meeting in the Chinese capital since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28.
The two foreign ministers crossed paths again just days ago at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, where they were seen briefly conferring on the sidelines over the weekend.
The February strikes by the US and Israel targeted Iranian government buildings, military installations, missile infrastructure and air defense systems on a large scale. Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes against Israeli territory and US military bases throughout the region.
Since then, the conflict has widened its reach across the region, even as diplomatic channels have remained active in efforts to bring the hostilities to a close.
