China Urges Diplomacy as Pentagon Flags US Munitions Shortfall
(MENAFN) China called Tuesday for a political and diplomatic resolution to the US-Iran war, responding to a Pentagon inspector general report that found the conflict has depleted American ammunition stockpiles.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a regular briefing that Beijing is "following the situation in the Middle East and Gulf region." He added, "We hope relevant parties will solve disputes through political and diplomatic means."
Guo's comments came in response to the Pentagon inspector general's first report on the matter, which concluded that munitions expended during the four-month war between the US and Iran caused "strategic inventory shortfalls" and revealed bottlenecks within the defense industrial base.
According to the report, ramping up production will require "significant lead time," with key constraints including solid rocket motors, high-grade explosives and propellants, and a shortage of skilled manufacturing labor.
