German Economic Sentiment Holds Firm as ZEW Index Edges Up
(MENAFN) Germany's economic outlook remained largely steady in September, with the closely watched ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment ticking up 0.5 points to plus 34.7, according to official survey data released Tuesday.
A sharper improvement emerged in assessments of Germany's current economic conditions, which jumped 14 points from August to reach minus 47.1.
ZEW President Achim Wambach said analysts are holding onto measured optimism about a potential economic rebound, citing fiscal stimulus and strengthening exports as key drivers.
However, Wambach cautioned that elevated energy prices — stemming from the continuing war in Iran — along with uncertainty tied to hybrid attacks, remain significant threats to Germany's economic trajectory.
Performance varied widely across sectors during the month. The insurance industry emerged as a standout gainer, climbing 12.1 points to 46.4, buoyed by higher interest rates. Banking also posted solid gains, rising 8.2 points from August to reach 52.9.
By contrast, steel and metals manufacturing and the automotive sector remained mired in negative territory, posting readings of minus 16.7 and minus 22.6, respectively.
Across the broader eurozone, economic expectations weakened, falling 5.6 points from the prior month to plus 25.8. The eurozone's current-conditions indicator, however, improved by 7.6 points to minus 13.9 in September.
