Saudi Arabia Issues Emergency Alerts for Jeddah, Mecca, Taif
(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia sounded emergency alarms Tuesday across three major western cities — Jeddah, Mecca and Taif — warning residents of a "potential danger" and urging them to take immediate shelter.
The warnings were distributed through the National Early Warning Platform for Emergencies, according to the Saudi Civil Defense. Officials did not disclose the specific nature of the threat.
Residents were instructed to stay calm and move without delay to the nearest safe location, ideally inside a building or an interior room shielded from windows, and to remain there until the danger has passed.
Civil Defense authorities further advised the public to avoid open spaces, windows, balconies and rooftops. Those caught outdoors were told to enter the closest available building or shelter behind a solid structure.
Drivers who received the alert were directed to pull over in areas clear of bridges and high-rise buildings. Officials also urged the public to steer clear of crowds and high-risk zones and to follow updates only through official channels.
The alerts land amid a sharp escalation in hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi movement, which has launched a string of missile and drone strikes on Saudi cities and infrastructure in recent days. Saudi forces have retaliated with airstrikes targeting Houthi positions inside Yemen.
