Merz Urges Iran to End Hormuz Blockade, Avoid Escalation in Iraq
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on Iran Tuesday to halt what he described as destabilizing regional activities and avoid expanding the conflict into Iraq through allied armed groups.
Speaking alongside Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi at a joint news conference in Berlin, Merz said the two sides discussed developments across the region, including the effects of the US-Iran war and the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
“Tehran’s support for proxies across the region must cease. We see the consequences each day; we also call on Iran not to carry the conflict further into Iraq,” Merz said. “Iran must finally end this blockade in the Strait of Hormuz; above all, it must halt its military nuclear program,” he stressed.
Merz said Germany supports Baghdad’s efforts to disarm militias backed by Iran and its broader efforts to strengthen peace and security within the country.
The discussions also covered the situation in the Red Sea, where the Houthis have strengthened their presence along Yemen’s coast and taken control of Mayyun Island near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
“The Houthis now control strategic positions around the Bab el-Mandab Strait and are attacking energy facilities in Saudi Arabia; this further exacerbates the situation in international energy markets,” Merz said.
