Denmark Calls In Russian Envoy Over Frigate Flare Incident
(MENAFN) Denmark summoned Russia's ambassador Tuesday after a Russian frigate allegedly fired flares at a Danish military helicopter, marking the latest flashpoint in escalating tensions between Moscow and Europe.
"This is completely unacceptable. Therefore, Russia's ambassador has been summoned for a conversation about the incident," Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on X.
The incident occurred late Monday, when a Danish Air Force Fennec helicopter came under fire from flares "in connection with routine photo coverage of a Russian frigate, which was in international waters off Gedser," a coastal town on the island of Falster, Denmark's Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said the Russian frigate launched two flares at the helicopter, with one passing "within a short distance of the helicopter."
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen condemned the incident on X, writing: "Reckless action from Russia towards Danish military during a routine overflight yesterday. Russian actions are meant to intimidate and divide. They will not succeed. We will not waver."
The confrontation comes amid rising tension across Europe, with multiple countries accusing Russia of a string of suspected sabotage operations and airspace incursions in recent months.
Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin said Moscow would conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the incident. He claimed this was not the first instance of Danish Air Force helicopters carrying out "dangerous maneuvers" near Russian warships, adding that he had previously flagged similar concerns.
Barbin argued the episode pointed to "communication problems" on Copenhagen's end rather than any fault with Russian Navy vessels. "The Danish side's attempts to explain the helicopter's provocative actions against the Russian frigate as 'routine practice' give rise to serious concern about the possible consequences of such recklessness," he told Russian media outlets, including a state news agency.
