Mara Holdings Adds 1,292 Bitcoin As AI Leaders Push For Slower Development
MARA Holdings had spent much of this year selling Bitcoin rather than buying it. The company shifted its focus toward AI infrastructure services and sold 23,093 BTC worth roughly $1.63 billion. Wednesday's purchase marks one of MARA Holdings' largest on-chain accumulations in nearly a year.
The company now holds 35,577 BTC in total. That figure includes 9,270 BTC managed under its separate digital asset strategy. At current prices, MARA Holdings' full Bitcoin position is worth close to $2.7 billion.
The purchase also landed on a turbulent day for crypto legislation. The CLARITY Act failed to clear a Senate cloture vote on the same day. Senators blocked the crypto bill in a narrow 50-49 procedural vote, and four Republicans broke ranks to vote against it.
AI Safety Warnings Shake Broader MarketsSeveral prominent AI executives raised alarms this week about the pace of frontier model development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay titled“We Must Pace the Frontier.” The essay warned that advanced AI models could soon help build even more powerful successors.
OpenAI's Sam Altman and xAI's Elon Musk echoed similar concerns about rising AI risks. Meanwhile, Google DeepMind AGI safety researcher Bilal Chughtai resigned from his post this week. He cautioned that unchecked AI development carries existential dangers for humanity.
Markets interpreted these warnings as a threat to continued AI infrastructure spending. AI-linked stocks fell sharply following the comments, and selloffs spread across the sector. Bitcoin's price rose in contrast, as some traders framed it as a hedge against an AI slowdown.
Stock Price Faces Separate PressureMARA Holdings' own stock told a different story this week. Shares fell 2.7% to $11.24 on Tuesday after a ratings downgrade. JPMorgan cut the stock to Underweight and cited risks tied to MARA Holdings ' Starwood joint venture.
The downgrade added pressure even as MARA Holdings expanded its Bitcoin holdings. The divergence between the corporate treasury move and the equity price reflects separate dynamics. One stems from balance-sheet strategy, and the other stems from operational and business-line concerns.
Corporate Bitcoin purchases of this size tend to draw attention from market participants. MARA Holdings' latest transaction adds a large, single-day figure to that broader pattern. The company's total treasury now ranks among the largest held by any public Bitcoin mining firm.
