Ukraine's Parliament Ousts Prosecutor General Amid Corruption Probe

(MENAFN) Ukraine's parliament voted Tuesday to remove Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko from office, with 317 lawmakers backing his dismissal.

The vote followed Kravchenko's own resignation, submitted Sept. 7 as the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) pursued an investigation into alleged corruption involving officials within the Prosecutor General's Office.

On Sept. 5, NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) announced they had uncovered what they described as a criminal organization operating within the Prosecutor General's Office, allegedly led by a department head. Members of the group are suspected of accepting bribes from fraudulent call centers and laundering the proceeds.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had pressed parliament to act swiftly on Kravchenko's removal, stating Monday that the prosecutor general had only one path left – to leave office.

Parliament's Law Enforcement Committee unanimously endorsed Kravchenko's dismissal on Monday, setting the stage for Tuesday's floor vote.

The vote came a day after Kravchenko accused NABU Director Semen Kryvonos of forging official documents, claiming he had personally signed a notice of suspicion against him. NABU pushed back forcefully, saying no such notice had ever been officially served on Kryvonos and characterizing Kravchenko's claim as part of what it called a systematic attack on Ukraine's independent anti-corruption institutions.

Kravchenko has further alleged that a recent operation carried out at the Prosecutor General's Office was an attempt to gain access to criminal case materials related to NABU and SAPO officials — an accusation NABU has denied, insisting it took no such materials.

Kravchenko's ouster arrives amid a deepening institutional rift between the Prosecutor General's Office and Ukraine's anti-corruption agencies.
