Belgium Postpones Eurovision Decision Over Israel Participation
(MENAFN) Belgian public broadcaster VRT has postponed a decision on whether it will take part in the next Eurovision Song Contest, saying discussions with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) remain underway over concerns about the competition's regulations and Israel's participation.
VRT had been expected to confirm its participation by Tuesday, Sept. 15, in accordance with Eurovision's established timetable. The broadcaster instead requested additional time from the EBU, which granted the extension, according to reports.
"We are in dialogue with the EBU regarding the concerns we previously expressed. Those discussions are still ongoing," VRT said.
The broadcaster has previously raised questions about whether countries involved in major armed conflicts should be permitted to participate in the Eurovision competition.
VRT has also asked the EBU to provide clearer and more transparent explanations of the rules governing participation, particularly regarding the contest's stated commitment to political neutrality and its non-political character.
The question of Israel's participation has prompted renewed discussion ahead of the upcoming Eurovision edition, with attention focused on how the EBU interprets and applies its participation rules to broadcasters and countries.
