Israel Begins Demolishing Palestinian Homes in West Bank Town
(MENAFN) Israeli bulldozers began demolishing Palestinian homes, mobile structures and agricultural facilities in the West Bank town of Humsa on Tuesday, according to reports citing a local mayor and a rights organization.
The demolitions are reportedly part of an effort to create what local officials describe as a “settlement belt” extending from the northern areas of Hebron to its southern parts.
The Bedouin rights organization Al-Baidar said the demolition operation began in Humsa during the morning hours, with Israeli machinery tearing down residential and agricultural structures.
“The demolitions deepen Palestinian suffering, threaten the stability of families and come as part of a policy targeting Palestinian communities, homes and sources of livelihood and increasing the risk of forced displacement,” the group said.
Palestinian institutions have argued that such demolitions are intended to limit the expansion of Palestinian communities and contribute to the displacement of residents. Israeli authorities, meanwhile, say demolition orders are directed at structures built without the required permits.
Rights organizations from Palestine, Israel and the international community have said that Palestinians face significant difficulties obtaining building permits from Israeli authorities, while settlement construction in the occupied West Bank continues to expand.
