UK Envoy Says Britain Shifts Approach Toward Israel
(MENAFN) The United Kingdom's newly appointed ambassador to Ankara, Jennifer Elizabeth Anderson, said London is changing its policy approach toward Israel following its decision to prohibit trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, according to reports.
"The UK is now changing its approach. There has been unimaginable suffering in Gaza and the West Bank, and this cannot continue," Anderson said in an interview in Turkish, adding that the UK "will not remain silent while more suffering continues."
Anderson officially began her new assignment in Ankara this month after presenting her credentials to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sept. 8.
The diplomat previously served as deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Ankara. Reflecting on her return to Türkiye, Anderson said the country had “always been in her heart” and that she had continued to closely follow developments there after completing her earlier posting.
Following her previous diplomatic assignment in Türkiye, Anderson took on the role of director for consular and crisis operations. During that period, she coordinated British assistance to Türkiye after the devastating earthquakes that struck the Kahramanmaras region in 2023.
Her latest remarks come as London faces growing pressure over its position on the conflict and its policies concerning Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.
