New Zealand Renews Support for Palestinian Rights, Statehood
(MENAFN) New Zealand has renewed its backing for Palestinian self-determination and a two-state solution while condemning the rising violence by settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, according to reports.
Foreign Minister Winston Peters raised concerns about people affected by the worsening violence and discussed conditions in the Gaza Strip with Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin. The two officials also discussed possible steps the international community could take to support progress toward a peace plan.
Shahin said she welcomed New Zealand's position supporting Palestinian self-determination and the establishment of a two-state solution.
The discussion followed a conversation between Peters and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar a day earlier, during which the New Zealand minister expressed concern over increasing violence by Israeli settlers and the continued expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank.
International criticism has intensified over attacks carried out by settlers against Palestinian communities across the territory.
According to UN figures, more than 1,430 settler attacks have been recorded since the start of 2026, impacting around 260 Palestinian communities. The violence, combined with demolitions and forced evictions, has resulted in the displacement of approximately 3,800 Palestinians, with children accounting for about half of those affected.
