Mexico National Day
On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Mexico as they celebrate the 216th anniversary of their independence.
Mexico is our neighbor, and few international relationships more concretely impact the safety, security, and prosperity of Americans. Under President Trump, we have charted a new chapter in our relationship with Mexico, one in which both our nations benefit from fairer trade, much deeper cooperation on security issues, and thriving market-oriented economies.
For too long, both of our nations have suffered from an epidemic of transnational organized crime and narcoterrorism, unchecked mass migration, and cartel violence that was allowed to fester in Mexico. The scourge of narcoterrorism has forced ordinary Mexicans to live in fear in their homes and poison smuggled over our border is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans. President Trump has made historic efforts to address these challenges head on, collaborating with Mexico to aggressively degrade and dismantle the narcoterrorist groups that have sought to hold the country hostage to their criminal whims.
We still have much more work to do together. The United States is committed to a safe, free, and prosperous Mexico, which can continue to be a critical partner for decades to come.
On this occasion, we join the Mexican people in celebrating their independence and extend our warmest wishes for a joyful and proud Independence Day.
