Lukashenko Holds Talks with Trump Envoy in Minsk
(MENAFN) Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko met in Minsk on Tuesday with a delegation representing US President Donald Trump, headed by US special envoy for Belarus John Coale, according to reports.
Welcoming Coale to the Belarusian capital, Lukashenko said the envoy's visits were being followed with “great interest” by people in Belarus, while neighboring governments and other world leaders were also paying close attention to the talks.
“Our company has expanded somewhat,” Lukashenko said, explaining that he had invited Prime Minister Alexander Turchin to participate in the meeting and provide a detailed update on the implementation of agreements reached during earlier discussions with Washington.
Coale delivered greetings from Trump and said the US president “fully supports everything we are doing.”
Belarusian officials attending the meeting included Turchin, Ivan Tertel, who heads the country's KGB intelligence agency, and Belarusian Ambassador to the United Nations Valentin Rybakov.
The meeting marks Coale's first encounter with Lukashenko in six months. Washington has continued to seek the release of additional detainees it describes as “political prisoners” as part of its diplomatic engagement with Minsk.
Previous rounds of discussions between the two sides have resulted in the release of hundreds of detainees and the relaxation of certain US sanctions imposed on Belarus.
