NATO Jets Shoot Down Drone in Lithuanian Airspace
(MENAFN) Two Italian Eurofighter aircraft operating as part of NATO's air defense mission in Lithuania were scrambled overnight and shot down a drone after it entered Lithuanian airspace, according to reports.
The operation was directed through NATO's Combined Air Operations Centre in Uedem, Germany, as stated by a NATO official.
"Last night, two Italian Eurofighters deployed on NATO Air Defence mission at Siauliai, scrambled and shot down a drone over Lithuanian airspace ... Investigations are ongoing together with national authorities," the official said in a statement.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda also confirmed the incident in a post on X, saying "a drone that just entered Lithuanian airspace was destroyed by NATO fighter jets."
Nauseda expressed his appreciation for NATO personnel over their "swift response," emphasizing that the alliance's ability to react quickly remains important for security in the region while the war in Ukraine continues.
