US Forces Strike Iranian Boats Near Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) US forces destroyed two Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday after members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps allegedly attempted to take control of an American unmanned surface vessel, according to reports citing US officials.
Iranian media reported that the strikes targeted fishing boats near the port city of Kargan and Larak Island in Hormozgan province.
Ahmad Nafisi, the deputy governor for security affairs, said an unknown number of fishermen remained missing as search-and-rescue teams continued their efforts, according to reports.
A US official said the boats were being used by the IRGC in an attempt to seize the American unmanned vessel. An American drone then launched two missiles at the boats, destroying both and reportedly killing most of those on board.
US Central Command spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins said: "Iranian small boats recently attempted to take possession of a US unmanned surface vessel, but they were unsuccessful after CENTCOM forcefully responded."
"The surface drone remains under US operational control," Hawkins said.
The confrontation comes as Washington continues efforts to safeguard commercial shipping through the strategically important waterway, where oil traffic remains below levels recorded before the war.
US forces and Gulf states have also resumed allowing tanker vessels to pass through the strait during daylight hours, moving beyond an approach that had largely depended on nighttime transit.
