UN Considers Storing Aid For Ukraine In Underground Facilities After Warehouse Strikes

The report notes that ten of the organization's warehouses have been destroyed in strikes this year, along with aid shipments worth millions of dollars.

According to UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine Matthias Schmale, one of the World Health Organization's (WHO) main warehouses containing medical supplies was struck earlier this month, while other attacks destroyed hygiene kits and school supplies for children.

“These deliberate attacks on warehouse facilities (...) are a new trend of the past few months,” he said after briefing states on Ukraine's humanitarian needs in the fifth year of Russia's full-scale invasion.

The organization is considering moving supplies into underground bunkers and delaying the procurement of humanitarian aid until the last possible moment to minimize the risk of the supplies being hit in strikes, he said.

“This feels increasingly like the front line is moving into the air,” he said.“That means extra cost also to the taxpayers, who at the end of the day pay for the goods that the U.N. and other humanitarians bring in,” he said,” Schmale said.

The expenses had not been included in the organization's $2.3 billion humanitarian aid budget for 2026, the coordinator explained.

Schmale noted that the United Nations is investing in equipment to protect its personnel, including additional armored vehicles and drone detection devices.

In addition, the organization is considering requests from the Ukrainian side to install mobile shelters against drones on streets and near bus stops amid the growing number of civilian casualties, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine said.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, a World Health Organization warehouse in Kyiv region was damaged i n a Russian attack on the night of September 3.
