Polish Military Builds Observation Posts On Border With Ukraine

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) The General Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported this on X, according to Ukrinform.

According to the Polish command, the tasks are being carried out by service members of the 4th and 18th Sapper Regiments of the Polish Armed Forces. In addition to constructing border fortifications using HESCO Bastion systems, the military is providing engineering support to the Nadbużański Border Guard unit of Poland. In particular, they are constructing observation and security posts near the border with Ukraine.

The work is being carried out, among other places, in the areas of the Dorohusk, Medyka, and Korczowa border crossings.

The HESCO Bastion system consists of structures made of metal mesh and geotextile material that are filled with soil or sand. They are used for the rapid construction of defensive structures and fortified positions.

As Ukrinform reported, on the night of September 13, a gas station near the Yahodyn border crossing in Volyn was damaged by a Russian attack, as was a locomotive near the border with Poland.

During an urgent meeting on the security situation in Poland, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Poland must be prepared for increased Russian activity in the coming weeks and months, and that the possibility of escalation affecting Polish territory could not be ruled out.

Commenting on Russia's recent strikes near the Ukrainian-Polish border, former Polish Defense Minister Janusz Onyszkiewicz said that Russia was attempting to intimidate Poles and weaken support for Ukraine through air strikes near the Polish-Ukrainian border. He said that further similar provocations could take place on Polish territory, including under a "false flag."

By 2028, Warsaw plans, as part of the "East Shield" project, to build 700 km of fortifications along its borders with Russia and Belarus, as well as detection and warning systems, forward bases, logistics hubs, and counter-drone systems. The project is expected to cost 10 billion zlotys (more than $2.5 billion).
