Giulio Lucarini

I am a senior researcher at the National Research Council of Italy, Institute of Heritage Science (CNR-ISPC), and an adjunct professor of prehistory and protohistory at the University of Naples L'Orientale, as well as in prehistoric ethnography of Africa and Asia at the Post-Graduate School of Archaeology of L'Orientale and the University of Salerno. Since 2016, I have also been a visiting professor of African archaeology at the University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

I graduated in archaeology from Sapienza University of Rome and later obtained a PhD in African studies from the University of Naples L'Orientale. From 2013 to 2019, I conducted my postdoctoral research at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge, first as PI of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship AGRINA-Human Transitional Pathways Towards Food Production in North Africa, and then within the Leverhulme-funded project MedAfrica-Archaeological Deep History and Dynamics of Mediterranean Africa, ca. 9600-700 BC. Since completing my PhD, my research has focused on how humans adapt to their environments and the emergence of food production in the Saharan regions and Mediterranean Africa.

I have a keen interest in studying material culture, particularly lithic production and function, and how artefact assemblages can indicate socio-economic changes and shifts in human-environment interactions. I am also passionate about the study and preservation of rock art sites, and I have worked on initiatives to enhance cultural heritage and provide training for local communities. I firmly believe that archaeology offers valuable insights into our shared human history, which can foster dialogue, promote understanding, and ultimately guide us in building a more sustainable and equitable future.

Over the past 25 years, I have conducted extensive field research mainly in Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia. Currently, I co-direct the Oued Beht Archaeological Project (OBAP) in Morocco, the Farafra Oasis Prehistoric Project (FOPP) in Egypt, and the Northern Tunisia Archaeological Project (NoTAP).

I have taught extensively at various institutions, including the Universities of Naples L'Orientale, Rome Sapienza, Cambridge, and Addis Ababa. I am also a member of the PhD Board in Mediterranean Archaeological, Historical, Architectural, and Landscape Heritage (PASAP_MED) at the University of Bari Aldo Moro. I serve as President of the UISPP Commission“Art and Civilizations in the Sahara During Prehistoric Times” and I am member of several international archaeological associations.

Alongside my scientific publication record, I have consistently prioritised the dissemination of my research results beyond academia to engage and inform the broader public.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I am a passionate sailor and lover of the sea. For many years, I enjoyed teaching children how to sail.
