Iraq Finds Drone Launch Site, Investigates Attacks on Saudi Arabia
(MENAFN) Iraqi authorities have located a site inside the country that was allegedly used to launch drones toward Saudi Arabia, with an investigation now underway to determine who was behind the attacks.
Lt. Gen. Saad Maan, head of Iraq’s Security Media Cell, said Tuesday that Baghdad “does not allow any attack on countries in the region” and aims to remain “a positive point of convergence” in the Middle East.
Maan stressed that Iraq maintains respect for all neighboring states, including Saudi Arabia, and said Iraqi authorities had been in contact with Riyadh regarding steps taken by Baghdad in response to the recent incidents.
An intelligence committee established to investigate attacks targeting Saudi territory identified the location from which the drones were launched, according to Maan. The discovery was made within Iraqi territory as authorities sought to establish the circumstances surrounding the attacks.
He said intelligence personnel, technical specialists and forensic experts were examining material collected from the site. Investigators were also reviewing physical evidence, including fingerprints, in an effort to determine the identities of those involved.
Maan said the investigation is focused on establishing responsibility for the attacks while ensuring that no party can “mix the cards” or attempt to draw Iraq into a confrontation that Baghdad does not seek.
The investigation follows drone attacks launched from Iraqi territory against Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline in the Riyadh and Madinah regions last week. The strikes caused injuries and damage and led Saudi authorities to temporarily shut down the pipeline as a precaution.
Saudi Arabia said it would not retaliate “at this stage” after Iraq committed to investigating the attacks and taking steps to prevent its territory from being used as a launch point for additional strikes.
The developments come as Baghdad seeks to contain tensions with its neighbors and demonstrate that Iraqi territory will not be used for actions that could trigger a wider regional confrontation.
