Denmark Summons Russian Envoy Over Frigate Flare Attack
(MENAFN) Denmark's foreign minister said Tuesday that Russia's ambassador had been summoned after a Russian frigate allegedly fired flares at a Danish military helicopter.
"This is completely unacceptable. Therefore, Russia's ambassador has been summoned for a conversation about the incident," Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on X.
The incident unfolded late Monday, when a Danish Air Force Fennec helicopter came under flare fire "in connection with routine photo coverage of a Russian frigate, which was in international waters off Gedser," a coastal town on the island of Falster, according to a statement from the Defense Ministry.
The ministry said the Russian frigate launched two flares at the helicopter, with one passing "within a short distance of the helicopter."
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen condemned the incident on X, writing: "Reckless action from Russia towards Danish military during a routine overflight yesterday. Russian actions are meant to intimidate and divide. They will not succeed. We will not waver."
The confrontation off Denmark's coast adds to mounting tensions across Europe, where a string of alleged sabotage attacks and airspace violations has repeatedly been blamed on Russia by European governments.
