Patrushev Warns Poland Faces Statehood Loss If War with Russia Erupts
(MENAFN) Russian presidential aide Nikolay Patrushev warned Tuesday that Poland could lose its statehood within days if Warsaw became directly involved in an armed conflict with Russia.
Patrushev made the warning while responding to comments by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, who had said Poland and its allies would be capable of defeating Russia rapidly if Moscow launched an attack. The Russian official argued that such assessments failed to take into account the full scale of Russia’s available military capabilities.
“Speaking about Poland’s military superiority over Russia, Sikorski apparently does not realize that if Poland engages in military action against Russia, our country will use the entire arsenal of forces and means at its disposal, and Polish statehood will cease to exist within two or three days,” he said.
Patrushev’s remarks followed statements by Sikorski at a European security conference in Kyiv, where the Polish foreign minister discussed how Warsaw and its partners might respond to a possible Russian attack. Sikorski argued that Poland and its allies would have a significant military advantage in such a confrontation, particularly in the air.
“If Russia attacked us and we took our gloves off, I think we would defeat Russia quite quickly,” Sikorski said. “We have an undisputed advantage over Russia in terms of air power.”
Sikorski subsequently clarified his comments, saying he was discussing a possible confrontation between NATO and Russia rather than a scenario involving Poland fighting Russia on its own.
The exchange reflects continuing tensions between Moscow and Warsaw, as Polish officials repeatedly emphasize NATO’s collective defense capabilities while Russian officials warn against any direct military confrontation between the alliance and Russia.
