RSF Drones Hit Civilian Areas in Sudan's Damazin, Army Says
(MENAFN) Sudan's army accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of launching drone strikes on residential neighborhoods and civilian facilities in Damazin, capital of southeastern Blue Nile state, on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the army's 4th Infantry Division, its commander, Maj. Gen. Ismail al-Tayeb Hussein, toured the city to assess damage inflicted on civilian sites and infrastructure by the strikes.
The division said the RSF had deliberately targeted populated areas, while Hussein said the army was stepping up efforts to shield civilians and critical facilities in Damazin. The paramilitary group had not responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
Military sources previously told media that army air defenses had shot down RSF drones aimed at Damazin on Monday evening, marking the second straight night of intercepted attacks.
The strikes follow an earlier incident two days prior, when the army reported downing an RSF drone that had crossed into Blue Nile state from the direction of the Ethiopian border.
The army has also recently claimed control of the strategic Jabal Kadam area in Blue Nile, saying it beat back an assault by the RSF and its allied faction, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N).
Blue Nile state, which borders both Ethiopia and South Sudan, holds strategic significance as a corridor for troop and supply movements.
The Sudanese army and the RSF have been locked in conflict since April 2023 over a dispute regarding the paramilitary force's integration into the military. The war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced roughly 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
