South Korea, Turkmenistan Strengthen Strategic Cooperation Ahead of Summit
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung received Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedow in Seoul on Tuesday for high-level discussions aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation ahead of a major regional summit.
The meeting took place one day before the first South Korea-Central Asia Summit, where leaders are expected to address strategic resources, supply-chain resilience, artificial intelligence and other emerging sectors considered important to future economic cooperation.
During their talks, Lee called for greater Turkmen support for major South Korean-backed industrial and infrastructure initiatives in the Central Asian country, according to officials. The two sides also discussed expanding collaboration around Turkmenistan’s plans to establish a logistics center connecting Central Asia with the Caspian Sea, an initiative linked to efforts to revive historic trade routes associated with the "resurrection of the great Silk Road."
The presidents agreed to broaden cooperation in several infrastructure-related areas, including shipbuilding, railway development and the construction of new urban communities. Their discussions reflected efforts by both countries to expand economic ties beyond traditional areas and create broader opportunities for investment and industrial cooperation.
Water management and measures to combat desertification were also highlighted during the meeting. The two leaders recognized the importance of addressing water-related challenges in Turkmenistan and agreed to strengthen cooperation by making use of South Korea’s advanced smart water-management technologies.
On regional security, Berdimuhamedow expressed strong support for Seoul’s approach to resolving issues involving the Korean Peninsula. He said Turkmenistan appreciates South Korea’s backing in international forums and supports Lee’s North Korea initiative, END, which stands for Exchange, Normalization and Denuclearization.
"We have consistently maintained the position that all issues pertaining to the Korean Peninsula should be resolved through peaceful dialogue and diplomatic means, and will continue to do so," he said.
Lee, meanwhile, expressed appreciation to Berdimuhamedow for facilitating the evacuation of South Korean nationals from Iran through Turkmenistan during "urgent situations" in the Middle East last year and this year.
Following the presidential meeting, South Korea and Turkmenistan concluded 13 bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding covering a range of areas, including investment promotion, infrastructure development and cooperation against transnational organized crime.
The agreements underscore the two countries’ efforts to expand their partnership across economic, technological and security-related fields as Seoul seeks stronger ties with Central Asian states.
