Tanker Towed to Oman After Strait of Hormuz Attack, 2 Crew Missing
(MENAFN) Rescuers towed a stricken oil tanker into an Omani port on Tuesday after an assault at sea left two crew members unaccounted for, according to the Omani Maritime Security Center.
Officials said the Panama-flagged vessel, the "ELGAIA," suffered an engine-room blaze following Monday's attack roughly 103 nautical miles (191 kilometers) northeast of Musandam Governorate. The tanker was subsequently brought into port in the Sultanate for safety.
An Omani Royal Navy ship rushed to the scene and pulled 23 crew members to safety, delivering medical treatment as needed. The Omani Maritime Security Center said search efforts are ongoing for the two crew members still missing in the aftermath of the strike.
Separately, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed Tuesday that a vessel had been hit by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz at 2040 GMT Monday. The agency reported no resulting damage or environmental harm but did not name the ship involved, leaving open the question of whether the report pertains to the "ELGAIA" or a separate incident.
