Ukraine's Parliament Ousts Prosecutor General Amid Corruption Feud
(MENAFN) Ukraine's parliament voted Tuesday to formally remove Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko from office, with 317 lawmakers backing his dismissal.
The vote came on the heels of Kravchenko's own resignation, tendered Sept. 7 as the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) pursued an investigation into alleged corruption implicating officials within the Prosecutor General's Office.
That probe traces back to Sept. 5, when NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) announced they had exposed an alleged criminal network operating out of the Prosecutor General's Office, allegedly led by a department head. Members of the group are accused of accepting bribes tied to fraudulent call centers and laundering the proceeds.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had pressed parliament to act swiftly, declaring Monday that Kravchenko had just one option left: to step down.
Parliament's Law Enforcement Committee had already thrown its unanimous support behind his dismissal a day earlier.
The removal vote followed a striking escalation just one day prior, when Kravchenko accused NABU Director Semen Kryvonos of forging official documents, claiming he had personally signed a notice of suspicion against him. NABU flatly denied the accusation, stating no such notice had ever been officially delivered to Kryvonos and characterizing Kravchenko's claim as part of a broader, coordinated campaign targeting Ukraine's independent anti-corruption institutions.
Kravchenko has additionally alleged that a recent operation carried out at the Prosecutor General's Office was intended to seize access to criminal case files tied to NABU and SAPO personnel — an allegation NABU has also rejected, denying that any such materials were taken.
His ouster lands in the middle of an intensifying institutional clash between the Prosecutor General's Office and Ukraine's anti-corruption watchdogs.
